Nestled among the rolling hills of Goochland County, VA, Adams International School is perfectly situated to take advantage of the area's thriving rural culture as well as the urban excitement and academic opportunities that nearby Richmond and Charlottesville have to offer.
The historic facilities of AIS have been thoughtfully modernized with the goal of supporting an exceptional educational environment, where natural inquiry can take root and thrive year after year.
Primary Education
Our Primary Education program is for children ages 3-6 in the Little Red Schoolhouse. The footprint of the original structure has been retained and the room is wood-paneled and offers natural light from windows on all sides. On the second floor of this 70 year-old former granary, you’ll find the school’s central library collection. At the library, students have access to weekly story time and a wide book selection, and will learn to use library materials to form bridges of discovery. The library allows them to satisfy their intellectual curiosity while they simultaneously refine their research skills.
The Elementary Class
The Montessori Elementary class (for children ages 6-12) is located on the first floor of a meticulously renovated dairy barn. Hardwood floors are lit by the warmth of light from windows that surround the room. Here students learn in a vibrant environment, immersed in their studies of history and geography, reading and language arts, mathematics and technology, physical and life sciences.
The outdoor extension to both classrooms offers opportunities for children to tend animals and engage in the cultivating of plants, and a winding brick path leads to the school's central library.
The Adolescent Community
The Adolescent Community classroom (for children ages 10-15) is located on the second floor of a meticulously renovated dairy barn. Students begin every day reading quietly in the armchairs scattered throughout the wood-paneled classroom. Whether your student is a precocious 10-year-old doing algebra, or a 15-year-old needing remedial math, they will receive individual and self-paced education in the Adolescent Community classroom.
In addition to the core subjects, middle school students receive instruction in electives such as art, American Sign Language, harp, and piano.
The Main Building
The upper two floors of the main building house the performing arts facility. The theatre is equipped with professional sound and lighting systems and serves as the school's dance studio and event space. The Theatre and Arts Library contains artist biographies, plays, and instructional materials that support classroom teaching as well as the individual theatrical interests of students and teachers. Finally, the music studio provides a comfortable and inspiring space for individual and group instruction.
